One of the problems in lightening the action of a '73/'66/'60 Lever Gun is making the mainspring light enough to feel light and smooth and yet heavy enough to set off a primer. An obstacle in achieving the lightest possible mainspring is the inertia/weight of the standard solid steel firing pin extensions found in all link gun clones. The Smith Shop Feather Rod cuts that weight in half.
Here's what we've done: In attempting to develop a lighter firing pin extension, we tried a number of solutions. Titanium, due to it's strength and lightness, was tried but we found the dissimilar metals of the extension and the frame and the hammer resulted in galling or chaffing of both the frame and hammer as the hammer was being cocked. Other attempts to lighten the firing pin through machining were made but the best solution was a titanium/steel combination. The Feather Rod is a hollow titanium rod with permanently attached pre heat treated 4140 polished steel on the working end. The weight of a Feather Rod is .7 oz. verses the 1.4 oz. of a standard steel firing pin. Other than weight, the Feather Rod is virtually indistinguishable from a standard '73/'66/'60 firing pin.
The Feather Rod is coated with CERAKOTE. CERAKOTE is a flexible ceramic coating that provides excellent corrosion protection, outstanding abrasion resistance, extreme hardness and unmatched durability. The coating has a unique, ultra slick feel, while providing a sleek satin stainless finish. The Titanium of the Feather Rod never touches your rifle frame or hammer.
The Feather Rod is available for the '73, '66 and '60 Henry rifles.
